Doug Melton

Melton- Doug always wanted his obituary headline to read: “Doug died…..it’s time for a beer and a bun at the Legion.” It’s been a family joke for many years. So now Doug, we are doing it your way. Doug passed away on July 7, 2025 at the age of 76 unexpectedly while on a trip with his family in Mont Tremblant, Quebec. Doug was born on March 31, 1949 to Lorne and Maxine Melton in Petrolia. He married the love of his life Mary (Roberts) on Nov 10, 1972 and had two children Brett Douglas and Erin Michelle. Doug is survived by his wife Mary, children Brett (Allison), Erin (Houston) Gojmerac, grandchildren Michaela and Lucas Gojmerac, mother Maxine Hoven, brother Chuck (Cindy) and sister Patti (Stu)Boynton, brother in law of Suzanne Roberts, Pat (John) Sidorko, Barb (Bob) Cunningham, Joan (Bob) Pratt, David (Elvie) Roberts, Cathy Lewis, Doug (Janet) Roberts Fiordisa Roberts, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Lorne Melton, stepfather Archie Hoven, in-laws Jack and Rosemary Roberts, brothers in law Dave Lewis, Don Roberts, and Bill Roberts. Doug’s true love in life was spending time with his grandchildren Lucas and Michaela. He cherished their hugs, loved watching Lucas play sports and listening to their many stories. Doug had many important people in his life, unfortunately, too many to mention here but you know who you are. I will however, mention one person, Janet Simpson who is like a second grandmother to Lucas and Michaela. Doug was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed following the Detroit Tigers, Red Wings, Michigan Wolverines and of course the Mooretown Flags where he was an active member of the executive from 1997 to present time. He often could be found teeing off early at the St Clair Pkwy Golf course where he met many good friends. After retirement from Shell Canada (1969-2004) Doug and Mary spent many winters travelling to Arizona and Florida. As per Doug’s wishes cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at the Corunna Legion on Tuesday August 12 from 1 to 4pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Br447 Corunna, On N0N 1G0 or Operation Christmas Tree, in Corunna. E-transfer donations can be sent to operationchristmastree@outlook.com. Please put your mailing address in the comment section to receive your receipt. Doug was not a shirt and tie kinda guy, you probably only saw him in casual or golf clothes. If you can attend please come dressed casually….”think” favourite sports team, golf, jeans and t-shirts, Doug would love it.

It’s difficult to comment on such a sad event just because fitting superlatives just don’t seem to suffice. I have known Doug for many years and he was a practical, sensible gentleman with a good sense of humour……….just the kind of easy going guy you love to be around. I cherish the memory of great times we had at Cane Garden Country Club in The Villages Florida and closer to home, our casual conversations in passing at the Parkway Golf Course where he enjoyed his leisure time. Our deepest condolences to Mary, his dedicated wife and life companion , his children and all of his great family. I think we’ll head over to The Legion for a beer and a bun with my Tigers shirt on as Doug would want it. Rest in peace Doug. We’ll miss you but won’t forget you.

Shocking . When i was opening the original Home Hardware in the Morning, Doug was on his way to his coffee buddies. He always stopped to have a chit chat before coffee . A true gentleman and lived life with a great smile and never a bad word for anyone , So Sad .

  23. Mike & Karen Hoven

Doug and Mary are great people to have in our family! When my father passed away, Doug and Mary drove to Grand Rapids to pick up my grandparents that were on a bus trip. They knew where they were staying and never batted an eye about going to pick them up. Such great people!

Doug will be missed. Such a great guy!

So sorry Mary and family, I just heard of Doug’s passing. Shocked when Larry lecour let me know, also Mary I’m so sorry to hear about Bill as well, we worked closely at shell and he became a very good friend. Not so good as a ball coach 🙂 you’ll have to ask Chris smith when you run into him. Both bill and Doug will be greatly missed . Take care

  25. I was so sorry to hear about Doug’s passing. As a junior golfer, Doug stood out — always kind, encouraging, and genuinely supportive. He had a way of making me feel special, and as I’ve grown older, I’ve come to realize what a rare and generous gift that is. Since then, I would whenever I would run into him — at the golf course, the grocery store, or at Flags games — he never missed a chance to say hello. That kind of consistent warmth is a true testament to his legacy. My deepest condolences to you and your family. You’re in my thoughts xx

  26. Mary and family. So sorry to hear of Doug’s passing. I have fond memories from public school, high school and years at Shell. He always had the best smile when we would meet. My condolences to you all.

  27. To all the Meltons,
I am very saddened to hear of Doug’s passing. He was a fixture in the community and a positive influence in my life as a kid growing up in Corunna. He encouraged me as a junior golfer and I always enjoyed playing golf with Doug and Mary and Brett. So many good times that I won’t soon forget. Please accept my condolences on behalf of myself and the rest of the Hamill family. Corunna lost a true gentleman. Rest easy Mr. Melton.
