Peter Cassel

Cassel- Peter Francis Cassel has gone to be with his Lord. He loved life, family, achievement, and friendship. The longtime Corunna resident, educator, and civic booster passed away peacefully on May the 5, 2020 at the age of 78 from complications of COVID-19, after living with Alzheimer’s for six years. Peter is survived by his beloved wife Beverly of 57 years; their children Lisa (Brent) Alkema, Bradley (Amanda) Cassel and Leanne Cassel-Jack; his sons-in-law, Darren Munro and Jeff Jack; his grandchildren, whom he adored, Emily and Sam Munro, Tamara and Owen Jack, Scotia and Skylar Cassel; and great-grandson Asher Munro. He’s also survived by brother-in-law Barry (Virginia) Smith, nieces Heather (Smith) and Jennifer (Smith), nephew David (Cassel), several cousins and “a houseful of close friends he built over his lifetime”. Predeceased by his parents Marguerite and Francis (Frank) Cassel. He was a respected educator for the Lambton Board, having filled the roles of teacher, principal, and superintendent of special education before his retirement in 1994. He also worked for the Ontario Ministry of Education in numerous specialty roles throughout his career. He served his community throughout his life in many ways. He helped to
get the ball rolling on building the Mooretown Sports Complex. As
chair and co-chair, Peter devoted untold hours over 19 years to make
the St. Clair River Trail a reality. He ran twice for public office for the Progressive Conservative (PC) Party of Ontario. Peter worked
tirelessly for his students and community, but above all he treasured
his family. He leaves behind a strong legacy of respect, kindness,
integrity and commitment for all who knew him. Cremation has taken place and due to the pandemic a celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Donations may be directed in his memory to the St. Clair River Trail (c/o St. Clair Civic Centre in Mooretown), Alzheimer Society of Canada or to his church. Peter’s family extends a special thank-you to his caregivers at Vision Nursing Home and to Lambton Elderly Outreach. Arrangements entrusted to Knight Funeral Home 588, St. Clair Parkway, Corunna. You worked in the Sarnia office and I was just beginning my career there. He on the other hand was already very accomplished in his teaching career.

Right now I am at a loss for words!
Peter was my friend and colleague.
We worked together for 5 years in the Education Centre while he was my boss as Superintendent of Special Education. I have the utmost respect for his professionalism and kindness.Laughter was always part of that.I was always happy to see him biking or playing Bridge after retirement. Lisa, Brad and Lee-Anne– your Dad was a great guy to work for and I always enjoyed his stories about the three of you growing up. I know he will be missed.
